
Turkey is a country where you can discover new food, new tastes, and new experiences. You may not like all of them, but you should try each one.

Here is a list of things that I have tried and found very interesting and unique when traveling to Istanbul, Turkey.

### Simit

Simit is a popular Turkish bread, typically ring-shaped, coated with sesame seeds, and baked to a golden brown. It has a slightly crunchy exterior with a soft and chewy interior, providing a delightful contrast in texture. The taste is somewhat similar to a bagel but with a unique flavor due to the sesame seeds and the traditional preparation method.

Simit has a long history in Turkish culture and is often referred to as the "Turkish bagel." It is a staple of Turkish street food and can be found on almost every corner of Istanbul. Vendors often sell them from red pushcarts or carry them on trays balanced on their heads. Simit is commonly enjoyed as a quick breakfast or snack and is often paired with tea, cheese, or jam.

At the beginning, I was like, "What is the deal? It's just a bagel with sesame." Later, I found out it is tasty when you are hungry - simple, but fulfilling. It is softer than a bagel, and it quickly became a favorite treat during my stay in Istanbul. Another thing is, you can get simit anywhere in the city, surprisingly. If you feel hungry on the way to an attraction, you can immediately find someone selling it on the street. It only costs 10 TL, and I have seen no one try to overprice it, unlike other Turkish food.

### Ay Çöreği

Ay Çöreği is a traditional Turkish pastry shaped like a crescent moon. It is made with a rich, buttery dough filled with a mixture of walnuts, raisins, cinnamon, and sometimes a hint of orange zest. The pastry has a delightful balance of sweetness and nuttiness, with a slightly chewy texture on the inside and a crisp, golden exterior.

Historically, Ay Çöreği is often for festive occasions and celebrations. Its crescent shape is symbolic, reflecting the importance of the crescent moon in Turkish culture and history. This pastry is commonly enjoyed with a cup of tea or coffee, making it a popular treat for breakfast or a mid-afternoon snack.

In the morning, we liked to stroll along the street and check out each of the bakeries (which was such a luxury in Istanbul). I stumbled upon this pastry and fell in love immediately! It has 90% filling and only a thin layer of crust, which I have never seen in a pastry so fully filled.

It costs about 35 TL, at the time of writing, which is rougle $1 USD.


## Bevereges 

### Çay (Tea)

Çay is strong black tea, served in a tulip-shaped glass with a double kettle called a 'çaydanlık.'

You can see people sitting in a tea shop drinking Çay while chitchatting, shop owners sitting back and waiting for customers while sipping on Çay, and locals ordering any meal with Çay. You can even see people playing chess while having Çay with them.

Çay is everywhere in Istanbul.

I was fascinated with what I saw at the beginning, so I decided to try it. Then ordering a Çay became a habit.

I even found a double kettle for making Çay in our Airbnb. That piqued my interest and motivated me to watch a YouTube video to learn how to make Çay myself.

At the time of writing, a cup of Çay costs 15 TL, which is less than 50 U.S. cents.

### Ayran (Salted Yogurt Drink)

Ayran is a savory, yogurt-like drink. It is more watery than yogurt, but it is quite smooth. It is salty and a staple beverage in Turkey.

Ayran has a long history in Turkish cuisine, dating back to ancient times. It is traditionally made by mixing yogurt, water, and a pinch of salt, resulting in a refreshing and hydrating drink. Ayran is particularly popular during the hot summer months due to its cooling nature. People often drink Ayran in meals, especially with dishes that are heavy or spicy, as its tangy flavor complements and balances the richness of the food.

When I was in Istanbul, I saw locals drinking from blue (sometimes red) yogurt-like cups all the time, whether they were having a meal or walking around.

### Salgan (Fermented Purple Carrot Juice)

Salgan is a traditional Turkish drink made from salted and fermented turnips. It has a unique and tangy taste, which can be quite strong and slightly bitter. This drink is also surprisingly free of sugar.

Salgan has been a part of Turkish cuisine for centuries and is often enjoyed for its supposed health benefits, including aiding digestion and providing a refreshing boost of minerals. It is particularly popular in southern Turkey, where it is commonly served with kebabs and other grilled meats. The drink's distinct flavor is an acquired taste, and it is appreciated by many for its ability to cleanse the palate and enhance the dining experience.

We accidentally discovered this on a menu with only a few options for drinks. Besides Ayran and Çay, Salgan was also on the list. So we decided to give it a try. At the beginning, we were overwhelmed by the salty taste, but it had a very interesting aftertaste that made us take more sips.

You can often find stands with "mountains" of oranges and pomegranates. These are juice stands, making juices 100% from fresh fruit.

I found a stand near Süleymaniye Mosque. The old man squeezed five big pomegranates for one large cup of pomegranate juice, which cost 100 TL, equivalent to $3 USD. In the US, one pomegranate easily costs $2.50, but here you can get pure juice made from five pomegranates. We felt so spoiled.

That was my favorite find in all of Istanbul.

## Meals

### Balık ekmek (Mackerel Sandwiches)

Balık ekmek is a popular Turkish street food consisting of grilled mackerel fillets served in a loaf of bread, typically with onions, lettuce, and sometimes a squeeze of lemon juice. The taste is a delightful combination of the smoky, savory flavor of the mackerel with the fresh crunch of the vegetables and the slight tang from the lemon.

Balık ekmek has a rich tradition and background in Turkey, especially in Istanbul. It is commonly associated with the bustling waterfronts of the city, where fishermen grill the mackerel fresh from their boats and serve them directly to customers. This practice has made balık ekmek a staple for both locals and tourists seeking an authentic taste of Istanbul's maritime culture.

You can easily find balık ekmek in a market, or in a restaurant.

### Mulberries

Mulberries are a small, sweet fruit that come in several varieties, including white, red, and black. They have a unique flavor profile that combines the sweetness of ripe blackberries with a hint of tartness. The texture of mulberries is similar to that of a raspberry, with tiny seeds that add a slight crunch. In Turkey, mulberries are typically in season from late spring to early summer.

Mulberries are highly cherished in Turkish cuisine and culture. They are often enjoyed fresh, dried, or used in various desserts, jams, and beverages. The fruit is not only valued for its delicious taste but also for its nutritional benefits, being rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

I never saw mulberries in the U.S., but I did have mulberries (桑葚) when I was little in China. I used to eat them straight from the tree. I was very surprised to have mulberries again in Turkey!

Must-Try Foods in Istanbul, Turkey

A **food court** is a large dining hall that hosts multiple restaurants. People can buy food at individual shops and share all the dining tables with other customers from different restaurants. An Asian food court is usually located inside or next to an Asian grocery store. They don't get marked on Google Maps, which is why I wanted to write about them.

My family loves food courts for several reasons: 
1) The food at food courts is usually cheaper than at other sit-down places.
2) You don't feel obligated to leave tips because you order yourself at the cashier and take your orders when they are ready.
3) You have a wide selection to choose from, and if you go with a group, everyone can order from the shops they prefer.

Food courts are our default choice when we go out to eat, unless there's a special occasion, in which case we might go to a fancy restaurant. The Dallas-Fort Worth area, especially with its large Asian population, is a great place to hunt for these Asian food courts.

## Food Court next to the Jusgo Supermarket (Plano, TX)

I could not find a name for this food court. On Google Maps, you can find individual restaurants, but you cannot tell that there is an actual dining hall housing all these great little Asian restaurants.

**Here is a list of restaurants in it:**

- Plano Sokongdong Tofu (Korean Cuisine)
- Sushi Spot (Japanese Cuisine)
- Morefan (Northern Chinese Cuisine)
- Hakka Express (Taiwanese Cuisine)
- FULLL (Boba tea!)

I love all of them, especially **LJ Kitchen**'s noodles and hotpot, **Sokongdong Tofu**'s Ox Bone Soup, **Morefan**'s Chinese burger, and dry noodles. My kids are huge fans of **Sushi Spot**'s Dragon Roll.

🤫 **Sushi Spot** has a secret dish that is not listed on the menu. In Korean, it is called Fedobap, and in Japanese, it's known as Sashimi Bowl. This dish is a large rice bowl with sashimi and vegetables. The owner of **Sushi Spot** appears to be Korean. If you mention Fedobap, they will know what you mean!

## Cali Saigon Mall (Garland, TX)

**Cali Saigon Mall** is a rare find for a Vietnamese food court in the Dallas area. To judge how authentic Vietnamese food is, you need to see whether there are Vietnamese people eating there. In this food court, you may see that 80% to 90% of the diners are Vietnamese, and almost 100% are Asian.

The most famous shop there is **Lee's Sandwich**, which sells the famous Vietnamese Banh Mi. It is only $5.25 for one sandwich, quite a steal. Sometimes, they run promotions, and you can get one free with the purchase of four Banh Mis. Also, you can get the famous Vietnamese coffee there as well, the coffee with... Watch out for the sugar if you are cautious about your sugar intake, but it tastes so good.

On a cold and wet day, I love to enjoy a bowl of **Cháo Vịt Thanh Đa**'s signature dish, Duck Rice Soup, also known as Cháo Vịt Thanh Đa. The soup is warm and savory, and the best texture is achieved when you dip crackers into it. The duck meat is flavorful and juicy, and the ample fresh vegetable slices make it a healthy choice as well.

If you love Japan and appreciate Japanese food, the food court inside the Mitsuwa Marketplace is the place to visit.

**Dosanko Ramen**, one of the restaurants, serves excellent ramen noodles. **Totto Yama** reminds me of Japan; they sell Yakitori Recipe (焼き鳥) at very reasonable prices. **MATsui** offers tasty Udon, Soba, and tempura, maintaining the same quality as you'd find in Japan!

To be honest, before I visited Japan, I didn't appreciate Mitsuwa enough. But afterward, every single restaurant there reminds me of Japan. While prices are slightly higher than in Japan, they're very reasonable compared to other food courts nearby.

After enjoying a meal there, you can explore the Mitsuwa supermarket and other stores selling cute Japanese items like Gachapons.

Best Asian Food Courts in North Dallas


We have a family of four, and we love eating out. It saves us time from cooking and cleaning, allowing us to relax and enjoy each other's company. However, we also care about the quality of our food. Finding both healthy and affordable restaurants can be challenging.

In this article, I will share a list of places we have found to be both cheap and healthy. Some of the deals are not well known, but if you know them, they can save you a lot of money!

## Schlotzsky's (Multiple Locations)

Schlotzsky's is a franchise chain of restaurants that originated in Austin, Texas. They offer sandwiches and pizzas.

They are not the traditional American fast food. Their food is not greasy or fried, and the ingredients are fresh.

Our favorite dish is the *California Chicken Avocado Flatbread*, which is a flatbread full of chicken, bacon, avocado, cilantro, and chipotle.

Something that not many people know about Schlotzsky's is **they offer a buy one, get one free deal for sandwiches and pizzas on Wednesdays** (as of May 2024). We discovered this one Wednesday and thought our bill was mistakenly cut in half.

For us, 4 sandwiches/pizzas on a Wednesday cost less than $30.

They have many locations in Dallas. Just Google it.

## Lee's Sandwiches (Garland, TX)

In [another post about food courts](/posts/best-asian-food-courts-in-north-dallas), I mentioned Saigon Mall in Garland, Texas. Inside the mall, there's a Vietnamese sandwich (bánh mì) shop called Lee's Sandwiches.

Lee's Sandwiches specializes in bánh mì, "European-style" baguette sandwiches, Vietnamese iced coffee, and the Vietnamese dessert chè.

Bánh mì is made with a choice of meat, fresh cucumber slices, cilantro (leaves of the coriander plant), and pickled carrots and white radishes in shredded form, all inside crispy bread. It's fresh, healthy, and filling.

You can get one bánh mì for $5 or $6. **They also offer a wonderful deal where you can buy 4 and get one free at the Garland location.**

## Taqueria El Paso, aka. Antique Crazy Tacos (Plano, TX)

How would you know which Chinese restaurants are good and reasonably priced? You check who are eating there. If they are all Chinese people, and they even only speak Mandarin there, you know this food is good and should not be over priced. We apply the same wisdom to the other cuisines as well. We stumbled upon the Antique Crazy Tacos, and we only found Mexican people eating inside and people running the restaurants didn't speak English very well, and we were the only Asians.

The tacos and sopes here are amazing. They also have my favorite Mexican dishes: tostadas de camarón, menudo (only on weekends), and caldo de camarón (only on weekends).

My only complaints are the service is very slow, and they don't update their prices on the menu. Occasionally, you may be surprised when they tell you a different total price for the bill. They seem completely swamped every time when we visit. I really hope they can improve the experience, so more people can recognize how great their food is.

## Agoza Gebya (Dallas, TX)

We love Ethiopian food, so we are so happy to find one restaurant in Dallas.

We found this place purely by accident. This is a small mom-and-pop Ethiopian grocery store, very small, with only a few tables to sit down for food. They offer the famous Ethiopian staple: injera. For our family of four, we often order the vegetarian combination (a huge plate with split lentils, collard greens, split peas, and cabbage served with injera) and a tibse meat dish, either lamb or beef.

When we ordered there for the first time, we could not believe the price. The veggie combo is $16, and the tibbs is $18, totaling around $40, and we have enough leftovers for another meal!

This is a gem in Dallas. I selfishly don't want to tell the rest of the world because I love their price. But I feel I need to support this small business, so I'm letting everyone know how great their food is.

Good Cheap Family Meals in Dallas

Here are the ice creams we love the most in the DFW area.

Our favorite go-to place for ice cream is Junbi Matcha in Richardson. Junbi Matcha is a dessert shop specialized in matcha. They offer both matcha boba tea and soft-serve ice cream. We always go there for the soft serve.
I love that the servers always try their best to make a huge soft serve for us using the machine. You can choose from various toppings such as cocoa nibs, boba, coconut flakes, as well as having matcha or cocoa powder dusted on the top.

Besides Junbi, SomiSomi also offers interesting flavors of ice cream, such as Matcha, Ube, and Black Sesame. You can customize your order with sprinkles and mixed flavors.
Their ice cream is a special Korean dessert known as “Ah-Boong”(아붕), a fish-shaped waffle cone filled with your choice of filling and topped with soft serve.
My honest feedback on SomiSomi's Matcha ice cream: the size is huge, but it is too sweet, overpowering the taste of Matcha. But still, it is a wonderful place to get ice cream.

Best Ice Cream in Dallas


Knowing Mandarin can surprisingly unlock access to many countries. It is extremely useful in East and Southeast Asia. First, you have China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Then, it serves as the lingua franca for the large Chinese communities in Singapore and Malaysia. Additionally, it helps a lot with reading signs in Japan, where Chinese characters are used for most words.

In this article, I’ll share a list of common Mandarin phrases and words. They can be very useful when you are traveling Asian countries.

- **Hello (你好)** - Pronunciation: *nee haow*  
  Start your interactions with a friendly "你好" (Nǐ hǎo), the Mandarin way to say hello.

- **Thank you! (谢谢！)** - Pronunciation: *shyeh shyeh*  
  Express your gratitude by saying "谢谢" (Xièxiè) after receiving help or a kind gesture.

- **You're welcome! (不客气)** - Pronunciation: *boo keh chee*  
  If someone thanks you, respond with "不客气" (Bù kèqì), meaning "You're welcome."

- **Excuse me (对不起)** - Pronunciation: *dway boo chee*  
  "对不起" (Duìbuqǐ) is a versatile phrase used to apologize or to get someone's attention.

- **Please (请)** - Pronunciation: *ching*  
  Use "请" (Qǐng) to politely ask for something or to make a request.

- **Yes (是的)** - Pronunciation: *shih deh*  
  Simply say "是的" (Shì de) to agree or affirm something.

- **No (不是)** - Pronunciation: *boo shih*  
  "不是" (Bù shì) is your go-to word when you need to say no.

- **Bye bye (再见)** - Pronunciation: *zai jyen*  
  When it’s time to leave, say "再见" (Zàijiàn), a polite way to say goodbye.

## Dining

- **Menu (菜单)** - Pronunciation: *tsai dan*  
  When at a restaurant, ask for the "菜单" (Càidān) to see the list of available dishes.

- **Check (买单)** - Pronunciation: *mai dan*  
  When you’re ready to pay, say "买单" (Mǎidān) to request the bill.

- **Credit card (信用卡)** - Pronunciation: *sheen-yong kah*  
  If you’re paying by card, just say "信用卡" (Xìnyòngkǎ).

- **Cash (现金)** - Pronunciation: *shyan jin*  
  For cash payments, use the word "现金" (Xiànjīn).

- **The food is great! (真好吃！)** - Pronunciation: *zhen haow chuh!*  
  Compliment the chef by saying "真好吃" (Zhēn hǎochī), meaning "The food is great!"

- **Water (水)** - Pronunciation: *shway*  
  Simply ask for "水" (Shuǐ) if you need water.

- **Receipt (发票)** - Pronunciation: *fā piào*  
  When you need a receipt, say "发票" (Fāpiào).

## Asking for Prices

- **How much? (多少钱？)** - Pronunciation: *doo-oh shaow chyen?*  
  Whether you’re shopping or ordering food, "多少钱?" (Duōshǎo qián?) will help you ask for prices.

## Numbers

Knowing basic numbers can be extremely useful, especially when dealing with prices.

- **One (一)** - Pronunciation: *yi*  
- **Two (二)** - Pronunciation: *er*  
- **Three (三)** - Pronunciation: *san*  
- **Four (四)** - Pronunciation: *si*  
- **Five (五)** - Pronunciation: *wu*  
- **Six (六)** - Pronunciation: *liu*  
- **Seven (七)** - Pronunciation: *qi*  
- **Eight (八)** - Pronunciation: *ba*  
- **Nine (九)** - Pronunciation: *jiu*

## Navigating Places

- **Toilet (厕所)** - Pronunciation: *tsuh swor*  
  Asking for the "厕所" (Cèsuǒ) is essential during your travels.

### Cod Cake (Bolinhos de Bacalhau)

**What is it?**  
Cod cakes, or Bolinhos de Bacalhau, are traditional Portuguese snacks made from a mixture of salted cod, potatoes, onions, parsley, and eggs, which are then deep-fried until golden and crispy.

**History**  
Salted cod, known as bacalhau, has been a staple in Portuguese cuisine for centuries, dating back to the Age of Discoveries in the 15th and 16th centuries. Portuguese sailors needed food that could be preserved for long voyages, and bacalhau was the perfect solution. Bolinhos de Bacalhau were created as a way to make a delicious and portable meal from this staple.

**Taste**  
These delightful cakes have a crispy exterior with a soft, flavorful interior. The salted cod gives a unique taste that's both savory and slightly salty, perfectly complemented by the creamy potato and aromatic herbs.

### Polvo (Octopus)

**What is it?**  
Polvo refers to octopus, a beloved seafood in Portuguese cuisine, often featured in various dishes from grilled preparations to salads.

**History**  
Octopus has been consumed in Portugal for centuries, often associated with coastal communities where fishing is a way of life. Polvo à Lagareiro, a popular dish involving roasted octopus with potatoes, is a traditional recipe that has been passed down through generations.

**Taste**  
My family loves octopus dishes for their tender yet slightly chewy texture and the rich, briny flavor. When grilled, the octopus has a smoky, charred exterior while remaining juicy and tender inside. When fried, it offers a delightful crunch.

We enjoyed a fantastic grilled octopus dish and a fried octopus sandwich at *Restaurante O Tasco Do Vigário* near the flea market.

One of the top places to try octopus in Lisbon is *Quiosque de São Paulo* in downtown *Cais do Sodré*. Run by the same people behind *Taberna da Rua das Flores*, this kiosk serves meticulously prepared snacks. The octopus salad, featuring cooked octopus with finely diced peppers, onion, coriander, olive oil, white wine vinegar, and salt, is a must-try and arguably one of the best in Lisbon. Though the portions are small, the quality is worth it, and you can always order more or try their legendary fried squid sandwich.

### Sardinha (Sardine)

Sardinhas are fresh sardines, often grilled whole and served simply with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of sea salt.

**History**  
Grilled sardines, or Sardinhas Assadas, are a highlight of the popular festival, Festa de Santo António, held every June in Lisbon. This tradition dates back to the early 20th century and celebrates Saint Anthony, the city's patron saint. During this time, the streets of Lisbon are filled with the aroma of grilled sardines.

**Taste**  
These small, oily fish are packed with flavor, offering a perfect balance of smokiness from the grill and natural, briny goodness. The flesh is tender and juicy, making for a satisfying bite.

### Arroz de Marisco (Seafood Rice)

**What is it?**  
Arroz de Marisco is a Portuguese seafood rice dish similar to a risotto or paella, brimming with a variety of seafood such as shrimp, clams, mussels, and sometimes lobster, all cooked in a rich, flavorful broth.

**History**  
This dish is a relatively modern creation, reflecting Portugal's rich maritime heritage. It showcases the country's abundant seafood and is a popular dish in coastal regions. The concept of combining rice with seafood likely has influences from neighboring Spain and their famous paella.

**Taste**  
This dish is a seafood lover's dream, with each bite bursting with the ocean's essence. The rice is perfectly cooked, absorbing all the savory flavors from the seafood and broth, creating a harmonious and hearty meal.

- **Grilled Sardines**: Local sardines are a favorite, especially during the summer festivals. Grilled to a crisp and served with a simple seasoning of olive oil and sea salt.
- **Grilled Salmon**: While not locally sourced (typically from colder seas), grilled salmon is a popular choice for its rich, fatty texture and slightly smoky flavor. This is my favorite!
- **Grilled Bream**: This locally sourced fish is another staple, offering a delicate, flaky texture and mild, sweet flavor when grilled.

### Ginja

**What is Ginja?**  
Ginja, also known as Ginjinha, is a Portuguese liqueur made by infusing ginja berries (sour cherries) in alcohol, often with added sugar and sometimes cinnamon.

**History**  
Ginja originated in the 19th century in Lisbon, particularly in the Bairro Alto district. A Galician friar named Francisco Espinheira created the first batch, and it quickly became a popular local drink. Several traditional establishments, such as A Ginjinha, continue to serve this liqueur, preserving its historical significance.

**Taste**  
Ginja is sweet and slightly tart, with a robust cherry flavor and a hint of spice. It is often served in a shot glass or a small chocolate cup, making for a delicious and unique treat.

*A Ginjinha* is the first bar to sell ginjinha in Lisbon, and is a designated Loja Com História (historic shop). A Ginjinha has been pouring its signature sour cherry liqueur, Espinheira Ginja, since 1840.

Enjoying Ginja in a chocolate cup adds an extra layer of decadence, as the rich chocolate melts in your mouth, blending perfectly with the cherry liqueur.

### Sangria

**What is Sangria?**  
Sangria is a popular Spanish and Portuguese punch made with red or white wine, mixed with various fruits, a sweetener, and sometimes a splash of brandy or other spirits.

**History**  
Sangria has roots in the Iberian Peninsula dating back to the Middle Ages. It became particularly popular in the 18th and 19th centuries as a refreshing drink for social gatherings and fiestas. The name "sangria" comes from the Spanish word for "blood," referring to its typically deep red color.

**Taste**  
Sangria is refreshing and fruity, with the wine providing a smooth base complemented by the sweetness and slight tartness of the mixed fruits. It's perfect for enjoying on a warm summer day.

### Pasteis de nata (Egg Tarts)

Pasteis de nata is literally everywhere in Portugal. These famous custard tarts have a flaky, buttery crust filled with a rich, creamy custard that's caramelized on top, creating a perfect balance of textures and flavors.

**History**  
Originating from the Jerónimos Monastery in the 18th century, these tarts were created by monks who used egg yolks left over from starching their clothes. The recipe was later sold to the nearby Fábrica de Pastéis de Belém, which continues to make the original version to this day. According to local legend, Pastéis de Belém, a bakery next to the Jerónimos Monastery, holds the original recipe for these tasty tarts. It’s the most famous spot in Lisbon to eat pastéis de nata and is an absolute must when you visit. Since 1837, locals and tourists alike have been lining up to snag a box of custard tarts to eat in the café or on the go. As the original, Pastéis de Belém is still an iconic spot in Lisbon to enjoy a delicious custard tart in a charming and lively atmosphere.

Another excellent spot to try these tarts is Manteigaria - Pastéis de Nata Factory. Located in the Time Out Market and other locations around the city, Manteigaria is renowned for its perfectly balanced custard tarts with a crispy, flaky crust. Watching the tarts being made fresh adds to the experience, making it a must-visit. The price of a Pastel de nata is a little more than 1 euro, making it an affordable and delightful treat.

**Taste**  
I found the taste of Pasteis de nata in Portugal a lot sweeter than the ones sold in Chinatown. Some of my Chinese friends even pointed out my photos of Pasteis de nata here and wondered whether they were burned because of the big dark dots. It turns out the dark dots are caramelized sugar. It shows why they are so sweet.
